Alami Organics
(PT Alami Sejahtera Nusantara)

We work with farmers from remote areas that were previously disconnected from market opportunities because of their geographical location and a dominant informal sector.

Tapping into Rote’s rich tradition

Recognized as one of the most efficient sugar-producing plants, a mature lontar tree (Borassus Flabelifer) can produce hundreds of liters of sap annually and is productive for about three decades. The inhabitants of Rote Island in the southeastern Indonesian archipelago nickname it as the “tree of life” because of the plant’s versatility. Its prodigious sap has served as a significant food source for many generations of Rotenese.

The tall, drought-resistant trees are native to the island and they’ve been ingrained into the Rotenese lifestyle, economy and culture for many centuries.

From Rote to the world

PT Alami Nusantara Sejahtera built a factory in Rote Island amongst thousands of lontar palm trees in organic-certified areas to unleash the maximum potential of the lontar sap, while also helping the island’s farm communities improve their livelihood.

Local farmers, highly skilled in climbing the tall lontar trees, harvest the sap daily. The collected sap is carefully inspected before being pasteurized and evaporated without any additives in our modern, hygienic, HACCP-certified processing facility. Many women in the village also actively contribute to their family income by being employed in the plant.

The resulting thick golden syrup is carefully filtered and cooled to maintain its color, aroma and nutrient content.

We follow a very rigorous process that ensures high quality, consistency and traceability of the final product.
